Pre-Sessional English Programme at London Bloomsbury
We are now offering a pre-sessional English course to our London Bloomsbury students who need to improve their English skills in order to meet the IELTS requirements for entry onto our postgraduate courses. See below for further information.

The programme has a strong focus on employability prospects and offers an excellent grounding in the key aspects of business and management, which are covered by a range of different modules. You will graduate from the MSc in Strategic Business Management ready to launch your career in the industry you choose. Students can choose to study the course face-to-face or online. 

Our faculty has many years of professional experience, with great links to the industry. As class sizes are small, you will benefit from the contact time you receive, and will get plenty of opportunities.

We have also successfully accredited our London Bloomsbury and online Masters degree programme with a professionally-recognised CMI qualification.

Who is this course for?

This degree is ideal for those interested in securing a career in business and management in an industry of their choice, and is especially relevant for those with an interest in the roles of manager, consultant, analyst and entrepreneur.

How will you learn?
On campus study

The programme is delivered in an interactive way with a real-world focus, and learning takes places both in and outside the classroom environment. Face-to-face learning is supported by online resources, including the Financial Times, case studies, simulations, learning videos, reading materials, online testing and feedback. There will be 5 contact hours per week, split into two 2 hour workshops and a 1 hour lecture.

Examination and assessment - On campus students will be assessed in a number of ways throughout the duration of the programme. Assessment methods include assignments, presentations and examinations.

Study materials and online support - Students will receive their core textbooks free of charge. All De Broc programmes are supported by our Virtual Learning Environment, Elite. Elite will be your first point of call for academic information. In addition, you will gain access to our online library facilities, and learning resources from the Chartered Management Institute, the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Financial Times. These resources provide a range of professional and business-focused materials that represent up to date market trends, sector-based articles and analysis reports.

Online study

As an online student, you’ll get access to programme content and learning activities at any time and from any location. In addition, you’ll receive support, guidance, and careers advice throughout the course:

In addition to lectures and workshops for each module, students will benefit from interactive activities, group work and business tasks with a practical focus. Throughout the entire duration of the course, you will be supported by academic staff.

The programme involves a considerable amount of group work and group assessment that will take place online, and up to 25% of the assessment takes this form. The assessments are designed to meet the learning outcomes both academically and professionally. This involves seminars, workshops, tests, presentations, assignments, and exams.

Study Options
On campus study

Learning inside the classroom and beyond, the MSc in Strategic Business Management has a real-world focus, preparing you for the dynamic business environment you will face after your graduation. Traditional lectures and workshops are combined with a wealth of online resources to ensure that you get the most out of the programme. You will benefit from access to case studies, online testing, video content, and more. You will also receive all core textbooks free of charge and will be supported by our Virtual Learning Environment, Elite.

Online study

All of your learning will take place on the Canvas platform, delivered by our online learning partner, InterActive. Each unit you study consists of an introduction, video clips, extended reading, discussion questions, as well as a summary and consolidation.

You will be assessed in a variety of formats, including portfolio and instant feedback tasks, self-assessed quizzes, as well as through your participation in VoiceThread presentations and questions paired with TED-Ed lessons. There is also a considerable amount of online group work and presentations that will count towards your overall grade.

As an online student, you will benefit from a range of innovative e-learning media that suits all learning types. You’ll receive the same quality tuition as our on-campus students, but with all the benefits of online flexibility.

Course structure

Full-time and online students will study for one year, which is divided into two semesters and the summer period for the dissertation. Students will study three modules, each worth 30 credits; two modules, each worth 15 credits; and another module worth 60 credits, totalling 180 credits.

Part-time students will study for two years. Over two semesters in year one, students will study two modules, each worth 30 credits and two modules, each worth 15 credits. In year two over two semesters, students will study one module worth 30 credits and another module, worth 60 credits, totalling 180 credits.

The course will cover the following core modules:

  • Global Business Strategy and Leadership (30 credits)
  • Management of Business Operations (15 credits)
  • Performance Management and Reward (15 credits)
  • International Marketing Leadership (30 credits)
  • Financial Information for Business Decisions (30 credits)
  • Research Methods, Professional Development and Dissertation/Project (60 credits)
Module content
Global Business Strategy and Leadership

This module will teach you about global corporate strategy and leadership, increasing your confidence in planning and executing strategic changes, taking ethical factors into account. You will also become equipped with a critical understanding of the relevant concepts, theories and frameworks that will enable you to develop your competence in leadership and strategic decision making. This module focuses on the positioning of and solutions for improving competitive strategy in a global context.

Management of Business Operations

This module assesses the applicability of operations management strategies across various cultures and investigates the factors that underpin the application of operations management strategies in an international context. This module also addresses and utilises information technology tools and packages.

Performance Management and Reward

This module equips you with the knowledge and skills needed to examine the design of performance management systems that aim to transform an organisation’s objectives and performance outcomes. The module focuses on effective performance review processes, at team level and individual level. It places importance on the communication skills used in the performance review process and the module also evaluates the need for employee involvement, as well as transparent, ethical and justifiable rewards for performance.

International Marketing Leadership

This module will assist you in developing effective international marketing strategies relating to suit an organisation’s corporate and business strategic intent. The module offers insight into international marketing leadership and planning concepts, and how these are applied to deliver results. In addition, you will be able to build and refine the skills necessary to anticipate and adapt to future international environment changes

Financial Information for Business Decisions

This module will equip you with sound knowledge in accounting and corporate finance, enabling you to analyse the key decision areas in accounting and corporate finance and evaluate how businesses are financed. This module will provide you with an understanding of the use of financial information for business decision making. In addition, you will be required to evaluate the main financial and business problems facing modern financial managers in a changing economy.

Research Methods, Professional Development and Dissertation/Project

Here, you will critically evaluate a business issue of your choice. The module will equip you with the necessary tools for researching within a professional environment, and provides you with an opportunity to diagnose and investigate a complex business issue.

Career progression

This degree will be invaluable when it comes to securing a career in business management. Potential roles include consultant, analyst, operational manager and entrepreneur.

  • 2:2 or above from a UK Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent qualifications.

Pre-sessional English

In September 2018, we are offering a pre-sessional English course to students who need to improve their English skills in order to meet the IELTS requirements for entry onto our full time postgraduate courses.

Students will have the opportunity to improve their English language skills in a supportive learning environment whilst developing their academic study skills in the areas of writing academic assignments, preparing examinations, giving presentations and participating in seminars and reading research articles.

All pre-sessional English courses will be offered on a full time basis through a seven or twelve week programme at our London Bloomsbury campus. Students will be able to meet their future course leaders and be introduced to the facilities and resources specific to their main degree programmes as well as develop their understanding of University systems, services and facilities.
